Bruno Klemmer,

A Celebration of Life

September 2, 1908-

January 12, 2006

Bruno lived a wonderfully healthy, long life of 97 years, 4 months, 10 days.

As you can imagine, with 35,500 + plus days of life, lived with the passion Bruno embraced every day with, volumes could be written about him and his adventures.

I will humbly attempt to highlight Bruno Klemmer’s life for all his friends and family.

(With no regard to chronological order).

Bruno was born on September 2, 1908 of modest means in St Louis, MO. He was the first of 4 boys.

He grew up in Chicago at Foster and Cicero, where Edens Expressway stands today.

Bruno always enjoyed life, from flying airplanes in the early days of aviation to playing tenor sax in “The Sunnyside Syncopated Six”.

Bruno met, fell in love with, and married Dorothy Human. They were happily married for 58 years. He was father to Amy Dot, Michael and Bruna Lee. A fourth and last child, Timothy, was stillborn. Bruno was grandfather to 7, great-grandfather to 7 and great- great-grandfather to 3.

Married during the Depression, Bruno had a series of colorful jobs. His jobs included delivery for Sunnyside oil, night delivery manager for Linde Gases, door-to-door sales of Singer Sewing Machines, Metropolitan Life Insurance and moth proofing.

Bruno also worked for McDonald Douglas at Orchard Field, known today as O’Hare Airport. He purchased a local Singer Sewing Machine store, which unknown to Bruno had a terrible reputation as a gambling den, with the equipment discreetly stored in the basement. “Never mind that stuff Bruno, the owners will be around in a few weeks to get it”

His experience with Linde led to employment with a welding supply distributor, which in turn led Bruno and his youngest brother into starting their own company “The Welders Supply Company” on the far north east side of the city. Over the years, Bruno was joined by his son and 3 grandsons in the family business.

Bruno’s leisure time activities included entertaining at local children’s hospitals as an amateur clown, attending Elks Club meetings, which Bruno was a lifetime member, and of course, his lifelong devotion to magic, and his passion, golf.

Golf led Bruno to many adventures, travels and friendships. Bruno played in several Pro Am tournaments with celebrities and professional golfers of the day including Palmer, Nichalous and Norman. He was a longtime member of Thorngate, Boulder Ridge and Ivanhoe Country Clubs. Many was the tale of a fellow member playing golf in the far flung reaches of our country when another golfer would spy their membership tag on their golf bag and ask, “Hey, do you know Bruno?”

His proudest moment in golf was when his friends at Ivanhoe started “The Klemmer Cup”, an annual golf tournament in his honor.

Magic was something Bruno loved forever. He relished showing his tried and true tricks along with something new he just learned. Family, friends and even strangers were delighted with his mystical talents. Bruno was never caught without his bag of tricks. Even a periodic hospital stay wouldn’t slow him down. Many a visitor was greeted with gales of laughter as they approached Bruno’s room, to find Bruno entertaining the nursing staff with his feats of magic. He enjoyed the annual trip to the Houdini Club Convention, which almost always fell during his September 2nd birthday (a birth date shared with his oldest great-granddaughter). He had many longtime friends in the local Chicago magic community, with the honor of DEAN of the Wizards Club bestowed upon him at the December, 2005 meeting.

No life can be lived 97 plus years without tragedies. Among Bruno’s, are the losses of his beloved wife, son, son-in-law and grandchildren who passed on way before their time.

Bruno had legions of friends and family that cared deeply about him and helped him cope with those losses.

Many a time Bruno would talk about those that he cared about and that cared about him.

He would always end it with saying, “I’m the luckiest guy in the world.”

It wasn’t luck, Gramp.

It was you.

Jason.

Sad News: Bruno Klemmer, our new Dean has passed away today 1/12/06.
Details will be posted here as they become available.  If you have a message or a picture you would like to add to this page, email them to keithcobb1@comcast.net
Bruno didn't always know the whole joke, but when he got around to the punchline, he  brought down the house everytime.  He was a fixture at our club, always front row center, even though he could bearly see or hear what was going on.  His presence alone brought a smile to your face.  Pictured below recieving his Dean Certificate at last months meeting from President Tim Adams and second VP Toni McDill.  He considered it a great honor to be elected our Dean.  Sadly this was the last time most of us got to see him.  He didn't make it to the meeting this month, he wasn't feeling well.  We will miss you old friend.

The following is a song that Clare Ashley wrote for Bruno's Brithday and requested that it be posted here.
